Goodbye “Sun Tax”, Hello Self-consumption!

The Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, has announced the repeal of the most unpopular tax in the energy sector, therefore the “sun tax” has been eliminated.
This measure is one more that will be carried out as a matter of urgency to lower the price of electricity and reorient the Spanish energy policy to the right side, through the Urgent Measures Law Decree.

Not only will the sun tax be eliminated, but also the administrative obstacles and the possibility of shared self-consumption will be simplified.

“From now on, the right to self-consume without charges is included, the recognition of the right to shared self-consumption, and the principle of administrative and technical simplification for small installations” Teresa Ribera.

Then, this new regulation of the Ministry of Ecological Transition will be based on three principles:

  • Simplification of bureaucratic and technical procedures (For example, registration in a register of installations not exceeding 100 kilowatts).
  • Right to shared self-consumption (one or more consumers)
  • Right to self-consume electric power without charges (derogation sun tax)

What advantages does self-consumption bring?

It provides greater energy independence in addition to helping to reduce the needs of the electricity network. It is an activity that generates employment. And most importantly, it guarantees consumers access to cheaper and more respectful alternatives to our planet, allowing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
